I have only traded 17 races in the last week. Although I have managed to take the profit to over £40 now. I have continued to back horses first with most of my stake and it has been quite successful however at least twice I needed to get out of my position in-running. I didn't want this to happen so I have given myself a good telling off and won't let it happen again! The profit for this week did include did include a £5 profit on the Superbowl.

Getting back into blogging on a regular basis is a bit of a challenge but I will try to keep the updates more regular.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-2933293897021096032012-02-05T21:21:00.002+00:002012-02-05T21:28:28.286+00:00£10 Challenge Day 2Profit £2.81 Total profit £10.39

Not the best day to be trading due to the weather. I tried to trade a few Aussie races in the morning. This was going OK until I missed the off on a pace race. This resulted in a £10 loss. For those of you that don't know most Aussie pace races are not offered in-play. A harsh lesson but a good reminder that luckily didn't cost me my bank. Overall my loss on the Aussie races was about £4. I did trade 3 of the Irish races this afternoon and nearly made £7 hence the small profit.

Not the start I had hoped for but The bank has already been doubled. Not sure I will be trading tomorrow due to work commitments and the weather.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-58015831529816696222012-02-04T18:59:00.002+00:002012-02-04T19:06:07.339+00:00£10 Challenge Day 1Profit £7.58

Nine races traded today and a reasonable profit. Not that much racing due to the weather so I managed to squeeze a small profit. One major mistake resulted in a £5 loss but recovered from that. One of the difficulties with using such a small bank is the need to use most of it to back on most trades, therefore the bank is often at great risk. Hopefully as the bank grows this will be less of an issue. Today most of my trades were on horses priced between 10 & 20. My mistake was caused by stake taken just before the off and then I was unable to trade out.

Not sure how much trading I will be able to do tomorrow.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-27287525285483109242012-02-04T13:03:00.002+00:002012-02-04T13:07:26.429+00:00£10 challenge for Geeks Toy Charity ChallengeI will return to posting on a more regular basis for the next month or so to support Geeks Toy challenge for Sport relief. It now has all the possible charting options you could possibly want. In the video I have tried to demonstrate a few of them. The combinations and options are endless. I really like it when you hover over any runner in your ladder the graphs will automatically change to that selection.

There will always be some argument about how much use charts are in sports trading. I find them useful as a guide but still prefer to watch the market and look at amount traded at certain prices.

Will these new charts guarantee you will now become a successful trader? No but they give you one less excuse why your trading is no good :)Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-13103553569471727242010-10-02T07:36:00.001+01:002010-10-02T07:37:52.868+01:00Back soonJust to say I will be start posting again soon. It payed off with a return of over £350 for the month. I traded a few races at Cheltenham and was very pleased with a return of over £20 a race on average. This was great as I was able to increase my stakes a little but also adapt to these markets which are different from the usual day to day races.

I also dabbled a little in some Aussie races and you can see a couple of these below. I was able to make reasonable profits. However I won't be doing these all the time as you need a break sometime. I also made about £20 from my football trading.
Next month sees the return of evening racing and hopefully the opportunity for part time traders to increase their monthly returns.

On a final note as I post this I do wonder what I am achieving by posting this. Is it for me? If it is I am not sure I need to post now as I am far more aware of my mental trading state now. Is it to help other traders? I am note sure how much it helps to know other traders are making money there are plenty of blogs that do that. Something for me to think about.

Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-26468112393514242212010-03-18T21:00:00.003+00:002010-03-18T21:03:50.965+00:00DenmanJust a quick post. I am not a great reader of form but Denman is a huge price to win the Gold Cup tomorrow. He may have unseat AP last time out but in November he was absolutely awesome.

At the prices I think that Denman is the only bet. Of course Kauto Star may win but is no value at his current price. Whatever happens lets hope it is a great race. Should be plenty of liquidity for all the traders.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-51446659653729620262010-03-01T22:16:00.002+00:002010-03-01T22:35:54.189+00:00Recovery Mission - FebruaryGot back on track in February. I managed to make a profit! The month started quite challengingly with a loss on the Superbowl. I suppose it was inevitabe after saying I was very confident with my Gridiron trading. I had built up a good profit but then risked far too much at the end of the game thinking the Colts would come back. I think i was a bit greedy trying to finish the season on a big high. The lesson from this mistake is not to risk too much when there is little time for any sort of recovery.. This mistake cost me £66.

My Horse Race trading has been steady if unspectacular netting £178 for the month. Hopefully I am warming up nicely for the greater opportunities in this month and beyond. As already stated the most pleasing development in my trading recently is my ability to trade more than one horse at a time thanks to the layout on Geeks Toy. I will try not to get too excited about Cheltenham as I will be at work most of the time. I also remember it can be quite difficult to adapt to the markets especially when you usually trade Kempton(AW) or Wolves.

I have tried to concentrate on just football for the rest of my trading this month. I often found that experimenting in some markets and inevitably losing in those markets can adversely affect my trading in other sports. The month was good with a few trading methods I am excited about if I can handle the long losing runs the strategy will generate but occasional big windfalls. I managed a profit of just over £100 from football. Just trading football and Horse racing in the next month will also give me some time away from my computer screen! The more I trade the more important I am realising this is becoming.

Looking forward to the rest of the year now I am profit for 2010.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-70896873303904012302010-02-04T22:16:00.003+00:002010-02-04T22:21:56.153+00:00Lucky LastJust a quick video to prove to myself that I can trade. I was pleased with this effort as I started the race with a loss and quickly closed that trade and moved on. It is taken from the last race of the day from a couple of weeks ago.

The Geeks Toy software is very quick and as I have mentioned before it is free. It is also very easy to customise.

Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-11944399642751677192010-01-31T20:31:00.002+00:002010-01-31T20:57:14.197+00:00Negative Progress - JanuaryTotal Profit/Loss: -£111.93

January was a very strange month for me. I felt like I made progress for most of the month but lost control in one session and made a loss! This is really frustrating as so much of what I did this month was very promising.

Lets talk about the manic session first. I was trying to get near the target(in my head) I had set myself this month of £250 profit. I went passed the target and was feeling very happy with myself and decided to trade just one more race and then finish. What happened next was complete madness. My PC went on super go slow I think my anti-virus software was updating. This caused me to miss the start and lose £50 on the race. Now because for some reason I thought that it wasn't really my fault. So I decided to make it up on the next race and layed the fav which won. Then layed the fav in the next race and it also won, by the time the third fav won I had lost all my profit for the month and some more. If you are reading this you are probably thinking what an idiot and that is exactly how I feel.

The crazy thing is that I am much better with my general Horse Race trading and have been taking my losses and moving on. However my stupid mistake cost me big time. This is a big reminder for me that on Betfair it is easy to quickly undo the good work of a month or longer. Anyway hopefully I have learnt from this very expensive series of mistakes and can move on to Feb where there should be much better opportunities for some decent trading.

On the positive side my American football trading was very good and I continued to profit from the sport. It is a shame that there is only the Super Bowl to go. My football trading showed a small loss but generally was quite sound. I am currently working on a few strategies for this year with the world cup in mind.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-74488262784791323222010-01-14T20:45:00.002+00:002010-01-14T20:59:37.162+00:00The Road Ahead! So after much thought i have decided that I am going to try and take my trading to a new more profitable level. I plan to show that with some patience decent profits are possible for part time traders. The Blog will continue in the usual format with the addition of monthly updates on my profit(positive thinking!). By showing any profits I don't mean to show off but what I hope to show are that small profits are possible with a reasonable bank. If you are looking for someone making life changing profits then you are reading the wrong blog. I will continue with my main sports and try and develop the ones I identified in the last post.

The start of the year has been a bit strange with the limited racing opportunities. However I have made some decent money in the American Football and Football. This is just as well as on the rare occasions that I trade a UK race I just mess up. To be honest I would be better off just writing a cheque to a better trader and saving myself some valuable time.

Below is a video of some inplay football trading last night. I was using The Toy for this as I am for all my trading now. The software is excellent it is very user friendly and extremely fast which is so important in trading.

Apologies if you don't like the music but I was experimenting with adding a track on YouTube. I feel my trading has reached a crossroads. Currently I have been trading for about 3 and a half years. I have dipped my toe into several different sports markets with mixed results. My main decision is whether my trading continues as a nice hobby that doesn't really make much money or I take this a little more serious to earn some decent extra cash. My initial thoughts would be to go with the latter however before when I have thought like that I have taken too many risks and ending up losing rather than making money.

To help my thoughts I have summarised my abilities in different markets.

American Football
My favourite sport to trade at the moment. I have a good knowledge of the sport that helps my decision making. I can regularly make 50-100% of my stake trading on Gridiron. The only downside is the timings of some of the games and the season is only 5 months long.

Horse Racing
I love these markets but they drive me crazy as well. My strike rate is about 75% and I feel confident in most markets. My biggest fault with these markets is trading too close to the off and having a bet taken just as the market closes then having to get out in-play. I could probably cure this by using take SP but I don't trust Betfair SP. Alternatively I could stop trading that bit sooner! Like many traders I feel I could be making so much more out of these markets but just can't seam to manage it. I also trade much better with a smaller bank e.g. I can usually make the same with a £250 bank as a £500 bank. I would also like to go back to working on a bot to make money while I am at work!

Football
I am usually very good at trading football. My only downfall is when I let a trade become influenced by my heart. I need to be more active in these markets as I could be making more from them. I have mainly traded the match odds markets at the moment and want to expand my repertoire by investigating the correct score market and Over/Unders markets.

Greyhounds
Limited experience. Similar to horses but much less liquidity. Think I will continue to give these a miss except maybe the televised races.

Cricket
Frustrating. I love the game of cricket and am very knowledgeable(I think!)but have suffered from some big losses. This stems from greed basically and using stakes that I was not comfortable with. I want to develop this in the next year.

Tennis
I am told the sport has huge potential but I haven't devoted enough time to the sport yet. I would like to learn more but am not sure I have the time this year.

Any other sports I have traded have usually been before the event. These usually generate small but stable returns.

The next few days look quiet so I will take a while to make my decision. I think that if I decided to make a real go of it I can make a decent amount but I have to be wary of putting too much pressure on myself.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-21668386271230548652009-12-28T19:16:00.002+00:002009-12-28T19:22:57.474+00:00Stable Markets?Today I was able to trade a few more races than normal. However I found the money around the favourites very difficult to read to get an idea of which direction the price was heading. It appeared that someone was controlling the market with quite a bit of cash. There was lots of money each side of the book and significantly more than was getting matched. I recorded the last race of the evening at Wolves to illustrate this point. Normally in my experience there would be a lot more movement in a Wolves market but the favourite is very stable in the last 5 mins.
Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-62255687968273924782009-12-18T15:43:00.002+00:002009-12-18T15:49:47.598+00:00New Toy for ChristmasJust been using the last 2 weeks to play with the Toy. At the moment it is my trading application of choice for Horse Racing. I like the versatility of the product and it has meant I am able to trade more than one horse successfully. I have always used Bet Angel in the past and found this to be a very good and reliable product. However it would be stupid of me not to look at other products. Currently there are some features missing from the Toy but it is free! For the moment I will continue to use both. If you want to try the toy download it from here.

Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-77483464759031380332009-11-26T20:33:00.002+00:002009-11-26T20:36:52.503+00:00Free Racing DiaryJust a quick post to say that you can register for a free Racing Diary with Racing UK. As a subscriber I have had one for the last few years. I always find it useful as it has all the racing fixtures so you can plan out your trading and look out for the big meetings. I don't think you need to be a subscriber because they didn't as for any subscription details. So treat yourself to a diary or get a cheap Christmas present for someone!Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-48754960821226228572009-11-19T19:14:00.002+00:002009-11-19T19:23:31.160+00:00Greyhound GriefI meant to post this earlier but forgot. I ventured into the Greyhounds on Tuesday. I meant just to have a look. So I decided to use a bank of about £50. I think perhaps someone was giving me a message not to bother. In the first race the 1558 at Sunderland I was happily trading on the fav when at 1556 the market was suspended and I was left with £42 liability. Now my bet was a lay so the fav duly obliged and won. Now I am not one of those people that believe these things always go against you because they don't. At times these sort of things have gone in my favour. If you read some people they must be the unluckiest traders in the world because every time Betfair mess up a suspension the long shot they had layed wins!

Anyway this has put me off the Greyhounds for a while. I don't think it was Betfairs fault because I presume that the race just went off early. I have checked my clock and it is right. Therefore I won't trade them if this sort of thing happens.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-84906584120669428662009-11-11T21:34:00.003+00:002009-11-11T21:42:39.438+00:00Evening Winter Racing
Now that it is pitch black when I get back from work most of my trading has to focus around the all-weather racing at Kempton and Wolverhampton. These markets can be very different from the markets in the day. Big Steamers and Drifters are very common mainly due to two factors
1) The racing is usually very poor in quality
2) This means that it takes very little money to move the price of a horse

Moves like the picture above are fairly common place. This horse halved in price in about 5 mins. If you are really brave you can even try the markets at Dundalk. Although these can be very thin. Anyway it is possible to make a decent amount and tonight I was able to clear £40 with small stakes.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-90597436601137814612009-11-07T07:29:00.003+00:002009-11-07T07:35:59.421+00:00Some improvement.
Today saw me return to some profitable trading. The highlight being the race above. I was very pleased with this as I thought carefully about when to enter this trade and things went perfectly. Sometimes I think I enter the market with very little thought and this is when I get caught. The rest of the trading was steady if unspectacular, that one race accounted for two thirds of my profit for the day. I think this was a good example of letting profits run however sometimes I think I look for big trades too often. I traded some of the breeders cup races and am looking forward to trying a few tonight.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-83572755972657041062009-11-03T21:42:00.003+00:002009-11-03T21:55:10.905+00:00The Wall
If trading is supposed to be a marathon not a sprint then I think I have hit the wall. Now I know that this time of year is going to be difficult for me with the lack of opportunities but this hard! The last week my trading is like this I either get in a green position only to make it red or it is red as soon as I open my trade. I think part of the problem is the pressure to match the returns of the Summer even though the opportunities are much smaller especially for a part time trader. Anyway I am telling myself that I just need to keep things ticking along and improvement will come. The most pleasing thing about this spell is I have kept my discipline telling myself to hang in and the profits will start to flow again. In previous years I have lost my discipline in spells like this and then made some stupid in-play trades.Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-67207510201482944062009-10-09T21:37:00.002+01:002009-10-09T21:42:20.734+01:00Inplay tacticsJust a quick post to show a inplay tactic that can pay off if you chose your races carefully. You also need to watch the race and cancel the bets if it doesn't look like working. You should be able to see that I lay the field at 1.51. Therefore if there is a close finish hopefully at least 2 bets will get matched and you can make an profit. It worked in this example but it doesn't always. You have to remember that some punters probably have faster pictures, although sometimes this tactic takes advantage of this.

Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7224383849217697840.post-18508899736055704862009-10-07T21:25:00.004+01:002009-10-07T22:36:25.276+01:00Small Stakes
Just been reading a few posts on using small stakes Peter Webb's on ten pound trader and Leon the fixers on tradeathon. So inspired by this or jumping on the bandwagon whichever way you look at it. I switched all my money to the aussie wallet except ten quid and traded the last 2 races at Kempton tonight. Now I did cheat a bit as I was using my full £10 to back each time to ensure maximum return. If you are starting off I would recommend you use stakes that you can back or lay with. However with my experience I thought I could probably just look to back and get out quickly if the market went against me. The only problem with this was the need to red up in the middle of trading a race. Which I did very inefficiently having watched the video back..

So I am very happy with my return of £5.91(59%) after commission. This did include a little bonus on the last when I had greened up for £2.82 profit on most horses however there was a £3.82 green on the eventual winner. Sometimes I struggle to make that amount on two races with a £500 bank!

Drifterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04145275912260633842noreply@blogger.com0
